Sweeping Statements

I wanted to start this post on a topic, which over the years, I have heard and seen said in various places, but probably the place I have seen it most is on Facebook. Yes, Facebook is a place to communicate and express yourself and at times even vent annoyance.

This brings me to my topic for today, “Sweeping Comments”.

When venting anger or annoyance please be careful in what you post. Time and time again I have seen people make sweeping comments about topics or ideas of something without all the facts and in some cases, no facts at all, and even without any knowledge of the subject or just listening to hearsay and rumours. I’ll give you an instance of one I saw the other day as an example, but will not divulge any names for anonymity reasons.

In the news recently (I only heard about this through some online media) that the Archbishop of Westminster has said that while reforms may be needed they had “un-intended consequences”, such as families being forced to go to food banks. A gentleman (we’ll call him Man1)on Facebook posted this and then went on to say (quote)
“Here’s two ideas for you Reverend –
1: Use the Churches BILLIONS to help change the world.
2: Pray to your IMAGINARY friend for help. I’m guessing neither will be happening or bring results, here’s my opinion to you. Keep you religious hokey pokey nose out of politics!” (un-quote)

This to me showed a total lack of respect to Christians everywhere and please remember when I say Christians, I’m not talking about those people who say they are Christians because they are white and born in the UK or that they attend church at Christmas time. I’m talking about “Practicing” Christians who read their Bible and spend time getting to know God and following Jesus’ example on how to live.

One gentleman who stated he is a Christian (we’ll call him Man2) replied and stated he was offended by his atheist friends comment and went on to say this:

(quote) “As a Christian I’m told by various atheists that I am to be tolerant of other people and their views and to not push my belief down other peoples throats, so I only discuss my faith if people ask me about it and will post inspirational posts to help build people when it comes to helping people, I also raise thousands each year for charity and good causes yet various “atheists” are perfectly happy to slag off Christians and complain and do nothing to help society. I’d like to know what you have done in the last month to help a neighbour or a complete stranger.”(un-quote)

Man1 replied (quote)“It is a free thinking world, more people should observe and practise that fact, so if I think that religion getting involved in politics is a bad thing then I will speak my mind. I’ve never hidden the fact that I am an atheist, as you are a Christian Demetri, you are open to have your opinion as am I but to state that you are offended by my thinking is as ridiculous as me saying I’m offended by the way you comb your hair, it will not change it not should it.”(un-quote)

Man2 replied (quote)“I’m offended that you seem to think with your statement that the church (Christians) are keeping money to themselves yet the fact is that the church is getting less and less funds coming in and their overheads are increasing with the work they do, for example work in third world countries. A fact you may not know, the government only pays out (job seekers etc) approximately 50p above what is classed as the poverty line in this country, just so we are not classed as a third world country. So the Church does a great job with things like “food banks” and also offers help with learning how to manage finances for free, which I have seen first hand how this has helped people and also saved several 100 people a year from taking their own lives because they felt they have had no where to turn. So maybe do some research and get your facts before making a sweeping comment because you don’t agree with a particular faith or belief or group of people. As I’m told “learn to be tolerant”(un-quote)

Note this went back and forth as you can see, and I have tried to keep this to the main sections which were posted. However, when reading this “Man1” made a sweeping comment about Christianity because he doesn’t believe in the Christian God or any religious belief, and felt he should put his ten cents in, without knowing any of the facts with the church and the help they “Do” provide. In this case where hundreds of lives have been saved (help people to deal with finances and get out of debt and feel they don’t need to commit suicide)throughout the UK alone each year.

So If you are vexed about something, feel free to post on your profile, but in doing so, please make sure you have all the facts, and don’t just go with the hearsay of what you think is right, but gather the facts from reliable sources… There is a great invention called

Google

lol.
